Building the EC reference and preparing its first pilot
We need a compiled electron-cyclotron (EC) reference before generating heating and current profiles for transport. The Primer explains that coupling; terminology is in the Glossary.
We built a local executable for the external reference: one external reference executable builds with verified artifacts and resolved runtime librariesC-154. The build uses a pinned replacement plotting library, Giza, with the available compiler and NetCDF libraries. Source files stay unchanged; recorded compiler flags permit the legacy Fortran interfaces. The compiler’s warnings remain in the retained logs.
Build preparation uses one CPU, an isolated working directory and a five-minute deadline. The final build finishes in about 66 seconds. Its executed helper, source archives, binary, plotting libraries and logs have content-bound provenance. Two earlier builds are retained: their source-snapshot lineage was corrected in the final build rather than rewriting old records.
A concrete request now proposes one unchanged upstream ITER regression case. The original current-drive prescription is proposed because a paired saved output exists for inspection. This remains the owner’s physics choice. The requested job uses one CPU, four GiB and ten minutes, with a five-minute solver timeout. Charging may cover a whole node, so the approval request states that resource ceiling too.
The submission launcher checks hashes of the binary, input decks, libraries, toolkit source and job scripts before execution. Its read-only preparation check passes. These build and linkage checks inspect the produced files separately from compilation; they do not exercise the solver’s plotting or physics paths. A job would retain native outputs, failures, logs and CPU/job metadata in a new directory. At this checkpoint, no job has been submitted and GENRAY has not been run.
A compiled executable establishes build readiness. Plotting parity, solver outputs, physical acceptance and transport-source conversion still need review. The independent ITER pedestal port still awaits its boundary choices. Historical test statistics are unchanged, and M3 remains in progress. The subsequent first-run failure and corrected result are recorded separately.
