Checking a saved EC reference and retaining pilot failures

new component Entry 31 · milestone M3

We need a reference-file check and a runner that retains failed cases before sampling electron-cyclotron (EC) labels. The Primer explains why surrogate data needs a defined source; terminology is in the Glossary.

We checked the EC reader against a real saved output in the upstream regression suite: 200 native bins in the saved upstream ITER EC output pass reader and accounting checksC-152. Its power and toroidal-current integrals agree with the stored totals to floating-point precision. The file identifies an older solver version. Reading it validates the boundary adapter; it does not select a project launch, establish current-solver accuracy or produce new labels. The upstream file is independent of our synthetic fixtures; its accounting check still uses our reader.

The saved case also shows why current conventions matter: parallel current is negative while toroidal and ONETWO currents are positive. Preserving the channels and their signs is necessary before defining a transport-source conversion.

The new pilot runner requires explicit input files, executable, reference/build identity, case and family IDs, lineage and wall limit. It snapshots the inputs and binary, retains logs and partial outputs, records failures, and refuses to overwrite a previous run. A timeout kills the subprocess group. Every retained regular file has content-bound provenance. A readable output remains draft data; it is not a physical acceptance result or a training dataset.

40 focused pilot, reader and Tier A checks pass in full and Tier-A-only modesC-153. Lifecycle tests use fake executables, including failed launches, nonzero exits, malformed or missing outputs, changed inputs, timeout cleanup, Tier B lineage rejection and CLI failure reporting. Historical full-suite statistics remain separate from these focused checks.

Compiler and NetCDF modules are available. The checked compiler configuration does not resolve the plotting library required by the upstream build, so that dependency or a documented executable remains needed. No reference build, solver execution or cluster job was performed at this checkpoint. The build and numerical execution follow separately. Production baseline and pedestal-boundary choices remain with the owner; the independent ITER port is unchanged. M3 remains in progress.
